Hazy
waves of heat rise from the concrete field that
is crowded with the noise of children at play.
Little people of all sizes are shouting, laughing,
collaborating underneath the scorching sun to
play a game of soccer in an abandoned city lot.
You might notice the lack of uniforms, but the
children don’t. Their faces gleam with the sweat
and determination of competition. You might be
unaware that the sticks on either end of the lot
are the goals, but the kids know exactly how to
score and have a strategy to do it. The kids don’t
notice the poverty, the age differences and the
lack of hope looming overhead; instead
they
see one afternoon of freedom. In this afternoon,
in this desolate lot, playing with and against
their friends, they gain the freedom to run, to
play, to be. Without your help, this is the only
freedom some of these children will ever know.
SPORTREACH
Abroad is
dedicated to these kids, finding freedom that
will last after the sun sets and they walk off
the field. It is our vision to join local and
international churches, in an innovative outreach.
We are missionaries who like to play. Put us on
a field with a ball in our hands and we will go
to work. By walking into the game, we develop
relationships, and using those relationships we
are able to invite the kids to a week long sports
camp especially suited to them. Whether their
skills and interests are in soccer, basketball
or volleyball SPORTREACH
has a program to meet the kids where they are.
Language barriers diminish where the common language
of “Sport” is spoken, and you might say it levels
the playing field. It is on this common ground
that we can then begin to reach the youth and
their families with the message of Jesus Christ.
The gospel message is presented in both word and
action throughout the week of camp and in the
last three years over 300 youth have accepted
Christ as their personal Savior and 75 families
have joined their local churches for discipleship.
The SPORTREACH
team is effectively sharing the importance of
being a total athlete; mind, body and soul complete
in Christ.
